Four-piece band ‘Scared of Jazz’ celebrate the classic Hammond Organ sound of the 1950s & 60s, when organ trios or quartets blurred the lines between blues, R&B, and jazz. The band cover classic Hammond tunes such as ‘Green Onions’, Back at the Chicken Shack’ and ‘Organ Grinders Swing,’ popular Blue Note tunes – Midnight Blue, Song For My Father and Chitlin’s Con Carne and standards like Summertime, Mercy, Mercy, Mercy, Fly Me To The Moon and Stolen Moments.

The band features John Ackroyd – Hammond organ and vocals; Charlie Farran – Drums; and Ray Russell – upright bass.

All four band-members spent time in cover bands playing Rock, Blues, and Rhythm & Blues but wanting to play with a jazz feel. Each had something to bring to the new mix. Guitarist Phil has always loved the music of Hammond virtuoso Jimmy Smith with guitarist Kenny Burrell and drummer Charlie was a great fan of English R & B organist Georgie Fame. Bass player Ray Russell is a master of those solid walking bass lines essential to the sound and John Ackroyd’s driving Hammond sound perfectly captures that great Jimmy Smith groove. Together these four musicians form the base of the new sound, bringing together their R&B and blues roots with the swinging feel of jazz.

‘Moving into jazz is trepidatious, exciting and why we are called ‘Scared of Jazz’. The good news is, we are not scared anymore…..so join us for the ride.’
