Jazz by the Sea Festival – GAC presentation at press launch 21.2.17 – Koh, Bournemouth.
Following the success of the last two years, we are rebranding the Bournemouth Jazz Festival as the Jazz by the Sea Festival 2017 #JBTSF and extending it to include new venues in Bournemouth and Poole, with a variety of events taking place over a week from Sunday 11th June to Saturday 17th .
We have increased our team of volunteers to include professionals with experience in planning and organising live music events, in artistic, cultural and educational development, in local government funding, business and management and in sales, marketing and publicity.
Our vision is to “enhance the region’s cultural profile and increase its tourism appeal over the next five years through the establishment of an internationally recognised jazz festival and through this contribute to the area’s future economic growth and cultural development”
We are doing this by creating an annual festival which brings world class jazz musicians to Bournemouth and Poole and provides a range of attractive entertainment opportunities and a positive financial return for local shops, hotels, bars, pubs, restaurants and businesses.
By inviting well known jazz professionals, we are creating top quality music entertainment for the benefit of our local population and at the same time attracting more visitors to the region.
The festival opens on Sunday 11 th June with a family Jazz concert in The Lighthouse Centre for Arts in Poole, hosted by Clare Teal with her Hollywood Orchestra led by Guy Barker with special guests. As presenter of a popular Sunday night Jazz programme on Radio 2, Clare is well known as the UK’s Queen of Swing and her concerts appeal to a wide audience.
The opening concert promises to be an evening of inspired music and entertainment and will include a special pre concert performance by local young musicians and the Dorset Youth Jazz Orchestra.
Throughout the Festival week, there will be live jazz performances at various locations, including retail outlets, shopping centres and arcades in Poole and Bournemouth and the Coastal Villages.
There will be a variety of themed jazz events in partnership with local hotels, including Cliff House Hotel, Miramar Hotel, Cumberland Hotel, Cottonwood, Hotel Du Vin
Live jazz events in bars and restaurants such as Koh Group restaurants in Bournemouth, Boscombe and Lilliput, Urban Guild and Urban Beach bars & restaurants, West-Beach, Jazz Cafe Sandbanks, Harry Ramsden’s, Cosy Club, The Guildhall Tavern and Key West at end of Pier.
We are promoting live jazz in clubs and pubs including Canvas, Chaplin’s Bar, Mr Kyps, The Winchester, Sound Cellar at the Blue Boar, BH6 Jazz Club, SUJC West Parley, The Grove Tavern, Dean Park Inn, King Charles, Jolly Sailor, The Libertine, 60 Million Postcards to mention a few.
And we are still looking for new venues and business partners.
We will be launching our unique Jazzmobile, a self contained mobile stage specially designed to present live music in public places. Watch out for this touring the town centres each day. The vehicle is being provided FOC by local vehicle hire company Abacus.
This year, Poole is hosting the European Maritime festival and in celebration of this special occasion, we are delighted to announce that we will be launching a Dorset Queen Maritime Jazz Machine in partnership with The Boat Club at Parkstone Bay Marina. This classic passenger boat will be serving Dorset cream teas and Jazz on Sunday 11 th June on Poole Quay. Bring your families and friends and come and enjoy a relaxing afternoon out.
We shall also be working in partnership with Beales Department Store and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra to create a unique Jazz Tea Dance on Wednesday 14th .
In addition, we are collaborating with the BSO to create jazz concerts for the elderly living in care homes, coffee clubs and community centres.
We are also launching a new event to celebrate international music and culture in association with the ETC International College. This is a project designed to engage overseas students and give them an opportunity to promote the music and culture of their countries.
We are keen to build on our relationships with both Bournemouth University and the Arts
University of Bournemouth and engage with students and young people. BU will be hosting a special “Jazz Stars of Tomorrow” event for young musicians on Friday 17 th March with a panel selecting musicians to play in the pre concert with Clare Teal and her big band. Students from AUB are helping us with various festival projects.
In collaboration with Jazz FM, we will be presenting an evening of Blues & Boogie with the sounds of New Orleans featuring well known acoustic blues guitarist Mark Harrison, a dazzling boogie woogie pianist Dino Baptiste and one of the country’s leading Blues singers, our very own Zoe Schwarz with Rob Koral and their Blue Commotion Band. The evening will be hosted by radio presenter, David Freeman.
Working with media partners such as Jazz FM, we will ensure the Festival is promoted more widely across the UK.
Many of you will have heard of James Taylor Quartet, the JTQ. His music was very much the sound of jazz in the 80’s and we have invited the band to perform at Mr Kyps on Friday 16 th June.
Canvas are also planning to feature another well known group during the festival, Incognito, who will be playing their own brand of funky jazz, soul music.
Saturday 17 th June happily co-incides with the Harry Paye Day, Poole’s own celebrated pirate and we will be joining in the celebrations by putting on some jazz music on Poole Quay and in several pubs in the waterfront area.
The Festival will close with our unique World Jazz Jamboree in The Lighthouse, starting from 12.30 and running through to the evening. The Jamboree comprises a series of spectacular concerts showcasing jazz music from around the world. It will include performances by:
Tommaso Starace Quartet – An accomplished Italian saxophonist who explores the melodic and cinematic approach to jazz music against a backdrop of images from one of Italy’s most celebrated photographers.
Monica Vasconcelos Quintet – A renowned Brazilian Bossa Nova singer with her wonderful lyrical compositions and highly original latin band. Appeared recently on TV in a documentary programme about Brazilian Boss Nova music.
Thokozile Collective – Dan Somogyi's talented South African jazz sextet featuring the reverberating rhythms and beats of the African continent.
Omar Puente Sextet – An internationally acclaimed Cuban Violinist and his band playing an exciting new approach to Jazz music.
The Soothsayers – A hugely popular Afro Caribbean band performing Afrobeat and reggae influenced jazz grooves that are bound to get everyone in a party mood. I would very much like to thank our funding supporters, The Arts Council England together with Bournemouth Coastal BID, Bournemouth Town Centre BID and the recently formed Poole BID.
Without their support we would not be here now.
Also The Lighthouse for supporting us with venue and ticketing arrangements, the BSO for collaborating with us for the benefit of the local community, the Universities for working with us on various creative projects and all the local businesses who have been generous with their support and encouragement:-
Koh Group, Beales Department Store, Abacus Vehicle Hire, West Beach, Urban Guild, Canvas, Mr Kyps, Cliff House, Miramar and Cumberland Hotels, Hotel du Vin, the Bournemouth Chamber of Trade & Commerce, etc
We are continuing to seek local support to help us with the festival. We are looking for business partners to help develop the festival and in conversation with one or two potential sponsors.
There are some really attractive sponsorship opportunities and if anyone here feels inspired to put their name to an event or sponsor a concert, we’d love to talk to you.
Given the success of the past jazz festivals, I am confident the Jazz by the Sea Festival 2017 will have a positive impact on the local area, enhancing the quality of life for residents in both Bournemouth and Poole as well as entertaining our visitors for years to come.
I would now like to invite our business partners to talk about their involvement with the Festival Programme.
Well that just about sums it up. We have a fantastic festival in the making this year. Go and tell all your friends, your families, your employees and your business associates.
Remember the dates Sunday 11 th June through to Saturday 17 th June.
Make it a Jazz by the Sea Festival we can all be proud of!
Thank you all for coming and if you have any questions we would be pleased to answer them…
