A resounding success for Jazz by the Sea across Bournemouth and Poole!

Local jazz enthusiasts and music lovers from across the UK were treated to seven days of world class jazz music this year with over eighty live events on offer across Bournemouth and Poole.

Jazz by the Sea Festival 2017 kicked off with a family concert at the Lighthouse featuring BBC Radio 2’s Clare Teal and her Hollywood Orchestra who captivated the audience with her warm presentation style and unique interpretation of the classic jazz standards which left the audience in no doubt of her claim to be the UK’s number one Queen of Swing.

The opening event was followed by a highly successful evening of Blues and Boogie music from New Orleans presented by Jazz FM’s David Freeman. From the dazzling piano playing of Dino Baptiste, recently returned from accompanying Mick Jagger in Mustique to the accomplished blues guitar playing of Mark Harrison and one of the UK’s top female blues singer, Zoe Schwarz who added a touch of class with her Blue Commotion band. Together they brought a full house down when they combined to play a final set celebrating the music of New Orleans.

Other highlights were the internationally recognised acid jazz band, Incognito playing the crowds at Canvas and the legendary James Taylor Quartet hammering out their popular funky jazz numbers at Mr Kyps.

However, the most rewarding Festival event was the day long World Jazz Jamboree which took place at the Lighthouse and featured music from across the world. Representing European jazz, Italian saxophonist, Tommaso Starrace played to a collection of old images by celebrated Italian photographer, Gianni Berengo Gardin, whilst talented Brazilian vocalist Monica Vasconcelos delighted the audience with her wonderful Bossa Nova style of singing. The Thokozile Collective featured the resonating rhythms and beats of an African township but it was Cuban violinist Omar Puente who set the audience alight with his vibrant solos that had everyone on their feet dancing to his unique latin jazz style. To round off a remarkable day of music from around the globe, it was the Soothsayers who presented a fusion of African and West Indian sounds.    A truly memorable World Jazz Jamboree at the Lighthouse in 2017.

Other festival highlights included the launch of the Jazzmobile, bringing jazz to public places across Bournemouth and Poole and the introduction of the Dorset Queen jazz machine playing music whilst cruising around Poole Harbour and featuring Chris Walker and his Hot5 Pedigree Trad jazz band and the cool ambient sounds of Chris Croft and the Revolution Club band.

The greatest achievement of the festival was the introduction of live jazz music into many local hotels, bars, clubs, pubs, restaurants and shops. Highlights included Tina May at Westbeach, the Sharp 9 Duo at Jenkins, Neo and the Cosy Club, Katie Francesca and the FB Pocket Orchestra at Koh Lounge, BoMo Swing at Chaplins, Spiral Jazz at Urban Reef, Veronique Joly at the Guildhall Tavern, Musique a Trois at the Hotel Du Vin and the ever popular Gin and Jazz afternoon at the Miramar Hotel. And in celebration of the jazz festival, the local microbrewery Brewhouse & Kitchen launched their new craft beer, BREWBECK. Mine’s pint of Dave!

The success of the Festival was a result of the support from the Arts Council and the local Business Improvement Districts in Bournemouth and Poole who collaborated with the organisers of the festival to bring live music and entertainment to the local area. It was a great result for the new BID teams whose aims are to help stimulate the local economy and create opportunities for local businesses to develop and prosper, and also for the Jazz by the Sea Festival whose vision is to enhance the quality of life for local residents, create opportunities for talented local musicians and encourage more visitors to the region.
