Spring Newsletter 2017
Jazz by the Sea Festival returns with a fresh new look this year with events taking place at various venues across Bournemouth and Poole from 11th-17th June.
A number of well known jazz professionals will be performing with local musicians during the festival week, playing in concerts and events across the region. There will be live performances in retail outlets, shopping arcades, hotels, bars, restaurants, clubs and pubs as well as a series of concerts at Lighthouse, Poole’s Centre for the Arts.
The opening night concert on Sunday 11th June features BBC’s Clare Teal and her Hollywood Orchestra led by world class trumpeter and band leader Guy Barker. As the UK’s Queen of Swing, Clare Teal’s family jazz concert introduces music from the Great English and American Songbook.
On Thursday 15th June, Jazz FM presents an evening of Blues and Boogie in the Sherling Studio featuring music from New Orleans, with well known acoustic blues guitarist Mark Harrison and renowned boogie woogie pianist Dino Baptiste and one of this country’s leading Blues singers, Zoe Schwarz and her Blue Commotion Band, hosted and presented by Jazz FM’s David Freeman.
To round off a week of Jazz at Lighthouse, the World Jazz Jamboree on Saturday 17th June showcases jazz music from around the world.
Opening the series of concerts is the Italian saxophonist, Tommaso Starace Quartet who explores the melodic and cinematic approach to jazz music against a backdrop of images from one of Italy’s most celebrated photographers, Gianni Berengo Gardin. Followed by Monica Vasconcelos who introduces the wonderful lyrical compositions of the Brazilian Bossa Nova with her original latin band. Dan Somogyi returns mid afternoon with his Thokozile Collective – a highly talented South African jazz sextet featuring the reverberating rhythms and beats of the African continent.
Then in the early evening, acclaimed Cuban Violinist Omar Puente and his Sextet play their unique style of music, drawing on the elements of classical and traditional Cuban music to form the basis of an exciting new approach to Jazz. Finally, bringing the Jazz by the Sea Festival to a close, The Soothsayers , a hugely popular Afro Caribbean 7 piece band performing original Afrobeat and reggae-influenced jazz grooves that are guaranteed to get the audience in party mood for our festival finale.
Tickets for these events are from £15 to £24.
